Aadhaar, which means ‘ base or foundation‘ is a 12 digit unique-identity number given to all Indian citizens based on their demographic and biometric data. This data is obtained by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a statutory authority founded in January 2009 by the (GOI) Government of India, under the provisions of the Aadhaar.

Aadhaar is the world’s highest biometric ID system, with over 1.170 billion registered members as of 15 Aug 2017. World Bank Chief Economist Paul Romer expressed Aadhar as “the most complicated ID programme in the world“.

Previous to the law of the Act, UIDAI worked as an attached office of Planning Commission since 28 January 2009.
Many nations around the world use a unique identity system where by every citizen gets a number that contains all details related to their identity under it.

The India Government has also demanded such a system in India and have called it Aadhaar, which is also mentioned to as UIDAI. Then they plan to use this number to give benefits to the residents through the Aadhaar number. These benefits could involve things like many subsidies that the government gives, like the subsidy on gas, pension, and other money schemes etc. The Aadhaar Card Program is run by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Aadhaar Card is a proof of residence and not a proof of any type of citizenship. It does not itself allow any powers of domicile in India.

In June 2017, the Home Ministry defined that Aadhaar is not a strong identification document for Indians traveling through Bhutan and Nepal. Despite the observations, India’s Aadhaar scheme is nothing like America’s Social Security number SSN as it has fewer safeguards and more uses.
